My Journey to Healthier Hair #1 cosmetics

The beginning of my journey with a thorough analysis of the cosmetics I use coincided with the period when I started struggling with hair loss. I quickly discovered that not only does dyeing have a negative impact on my hair, drying it out and contributing to hair loss, but daily products such as shampoos also have an adverse effect. I was surprised when I realized that most care products contain strong detergents, far from being neutral to our health. I’m talking not only about shampoos but also about body wash gels, and even those intended for intimate hygiene!

Hidden Enemies in the Composition: SLS, SLES, and Others

Especially SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) caught my attention as strong detergents that can too effectively remove natural oils from our skin, leading to its dryness. Skin deprived of proper moisture becomes rough, reddened, and prone to irritation. Moreover, prolonged use of products containing these substances can even damage the skin’s lipid barrier, which is crucial in maintaining its proper level of hydration and protection.

Unfortunately, the list of potential villains is longer and includes substances such as:

– Sodium Coco Sulfate (SCS), Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS), Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES), as well as Ethyl PEG-15 Cocamine Sulfate, Alkylbenzene Sulfonates, or Dioctyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate.

All these ingredients can have a similar negative impact on our hair and skin.

So, how can we take care of the health of our skin and hair?

Gentle Alternatives: The Path to Health and Beauty

I discovered that there is a whole range of gentler alternatives that can replace aggressive products. Cosmetics based on natural oils, such as soaps and shampoos from coconut, olive, or argan oil, proved to be an excellent choice. These natural ingredients not only gently cleanse the skin and hair but also provide them with essential nutrients, supporting their regeneration and strengthening the skin’s natural protective barrier.

My Thoughts

Making the decision to switch to cosmetics with gentler ingredients was one of the best steps I could take for my hair and skin. I encourage everyone who struggles with similar issues to closely examine the compositions of cosmetics and choose those that support the health of our skin rather than destroy it. Remember, beauty starts with health, and healthy hair and skin are the foundations of our well-being and self-confidence.
